What are Phishing, Vishing, and Smishing?

  • Updated

Phishing, vishing, and smishing are types of cyber scams that use social engineering techniques to get users to share their confidential information such as bank details, log in, password, or card details, and they may contain links that will bring malware to your device.

  • Phishing: Fake emails intended to trick the user, may come in the form of great promotions on fake websites, payment slips, or fake charges, confusing messages with malicious links, and others. Never click, pay, or trust suspicious emails. Always check the authenticity of the information by validating its legitimacy through safe channels of communication.
  • Vishing: Criminals call people pretending to be from companies and masquerade as acquaintances with the sole intention of collecting data about you or asking you to perform unusual actions (e.g. take action on websites or install software programs). Usually, they have information about you previously obtained from data leaks or social networks. They may ask you for sensitive data in a very manipulative and convincing fashion. Never disclose personal or account-related information to anyone via phone. Always check the authenticity of the information by validating its legitimacy through safe channels of communication.
  • Smishing: A variant of Phishing coming from SMS (text messages) which includes but is not limited to criminals posing as companies with special promotions or prizes for you. These types of messages should be ignored. Always check the authenticity of the information by validating its legitimacy through safe channels of communication.
